East Timor
In 1999 the United Nations called on Australia to lead the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET). Australia, who contributed 5,500 personnel and the force commander, Major General Peter Cosgrove, was tasked with restoring peace and security, protecting and supporting UNAMET, and facilitating humanitarian assistance. In 2006 Australia led another military deployment, Operation Astute, to quell unrest and return stability in East Timor following a request from East Timor’s government.
The support continues with a multi-national mission under the United Nations to help develop East Timor’s police force. The museum has a small number artefacts donated from this period.
